PSTN switch-off countdown

Analogue phone lines switch off on 31 January 2027

Openreach has confirmed there will be no extension. Copper lines and ISDN stop working, so phones, alarm lines, lift phones and some card terminals need to move to digital services first.

Three ways to modernise your phones

We supply, set up and support all three, and recommend the one that fits how your team works.

Hosted cloud phones

Horizon

  • Call queues, hunt groups and auto attendants
  • Voicemail to email and call recording
  • Easy changes through a web portal

Best for: offices that want traditional handsets with modern features.

Microsoft 365

Microsoft Teams calling

Turn Teams into your phone system, so calls, chat and meetings sit in one app on desktop, mobile and compatible desk phones.

  • External calls to landlines and mobiles from Teams
  • Your existing numbers ported in
  • Set up alongside your Microsoft 365

Best for: teams already working in Microsoft 365.

Calling + AI

Cisco Webex calling

Reliable cloud calling with Webex apps and handsets, plus optional AI call transcription through a third-party tool.

  • AI transcription of calls
  • Call notes sent straight into many popular CRMs
  • Webex meetings and messaging included

Best for: sales and service teams that log calls in a CRM.

Number porting

Keep your numbers when you switch

Moving to a cloud phone system doesn’t mean changing your numbers. We transfer (“port”) them from your current provider, and your customers keep calling the same numbers.

Check your numbers

We confirm your numbers can be ported, using a recent bill from your current provider.

Sign the authority

You sign a letter of authority so we can request the transfer for you.

Set up and test

Your system, handsets and apps are configured and tested before the switch.

Go live

On the agreed date your numbers move across, usually with little or no interruption.

Good to know: a simple single-number port often takes around one to two weeks; multi-line numbers and ranges can take longer. Keep your old service active until the port completes, or the number can be lost. More on number porting

FAQs

Business phone system questions

Can we keep our existing phone numbers?

Yes. Your numbers are ported from your current provider to your new cloud phone system, and you can add extra numbers, including local numbers for other areas, at the same time.

How long does number porting take in the UK?

A simple port of a single number often takes around one to two weeks. Multi-line numbers and number ranges can take longer. We give you a target date once the port request is accepted, and keep your old service running until it completes.

What happens when the PSTN is switched off in January 2027?

Traditional copper phone lines and ISDN will stop working on 31 January 2027, and Openreach has confirmed there will be no extension. Phones, and anything else that uses a phone line, such as alarms, lift lines, fax machines and some card terminals, need to move to digital services like VoIP and SoGEA broadband. We can audit what you have and plan the move.

Which is best: Horizon, Teams or Webex?

It depends on how your team works. Horizon suits offices that want traditional desk phones with cloud features. Teams calling suits organisations already using Microsoft 365. Webex suits teams that want AI call transcription into their CRM. We’ll recommend the right fit after a short review.

Can calls be transcribed into our CRM?

Yes. With Cisco Webex calling and a third-party AI tool, calls can be transcribed and notes sent straight into many popular CRMs. We set it up and can help you make sure callers know when calls are recorded.

Do we need new handsets for VoIP?

Not always. You can use desk phones, a softphone app on your computer or a mobile app. We recommend handsets based on how your team works, and some existing IP phones can be reused.

Can our phone system work with Microsoft Teams?

Yes. We can connect your business numbers to Microsoft Teams so staff can make and take calls from Teams on their computer or mobile, wherever they are working.

Does a cloud phone system include call queuing and auto attendant?

Yes. Cloud PBX systems include features such as call queues, auto attendants (IVR menus), hunt groups, voicemail to email, call recording and out-of-hours routing, all managed from an online portal.

What if our internet goes down?

Calls can be diverted automatically to mobiles or another site, and a 4G or 5G backup connection can keep your phones working. Because we also look after connectivity, we deal with the fault for you.

Do you install VoIP phone systems across Sussex?

Yes. ABCOM is based in Burgess Hill and supplies and supports business phone systems and VoIP across Sussex and the UK, with UK-based support from our own team.
