Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Microsoft Defender and Microsoft Purview?

Defender protects your business from attack: it secures identities, laptops, email and cloud apps and helps contain threats. Purview protects your data: it classifies sensitive information, stops it leaking, and helps you meet compliance and audit requirements. Most small businesses need both, and they work best together.

What is included in Microsoft Defender Suite for Business Premium?

The suite adds Entra ID Plan 2 (risk-based access and identity protection), Defender for Identity, Defender for Endpoint Plan 2 (advanced device protection), Defender for Office 365 Plan 2 (advanced email and link protection) and Defender for Cloud Apps (visibility and control of shadow IT and SaaS use) on top of Microsoft 365 Business Premium.

What is included in Microsoft Purview Suite for Business Premium?

Purview Suite for Business Premium adds E5-level eDiscovery and Audit, Insider Risk Management, and Information Protection and Governance, including data loss prevention and sensitivity labels, to Microsoft 365 Business Premium.

Is there a deal on the Defender and Purview suites?

Yes. Defender and Purview can be bundled, and a bundle usually costs far less than buying separate security, backup and compliance tools. We review the licences you pay for today, show what you could save, and quote a single bundle with one invoice. Ask about any current offers when you book your free review.

Do I need Microsoft 365 Business Premium first?

Yes. These suites are designed as add-ons to Microsoft 365 Business Premium. If you are on Business Basic or Business Standard, moving up to Business Premium is the usual first step because it adds Defender for Business, Intune device management and Conditional Access.

Do I need Defender and Purview before rolling out Microsoft 365 Copilot?

We strongly recommend it. Copilot works with the data your staff can already access, so oversharing and weak permissions become visible very quickly. Purview helps you label and protect sensitive data first, and Defender helps secure identities and devices. Our AI Readiness Sprint covers this before Copilot goes live.

Will this help us with Cyber Essentials?

It helps with several of the controls, such as multi-factor authentication, device protection, patching and malware defence, but Cyber Essentials is a separate assessment. We can check your Microsoft 365 setup against the latest requirements and guide you through certification.

Can ABCOM set it up and manage it for us?

Yes. We are a Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider and an NCSC Assured Service Provider. We can licence, configure and support Defender and Purview alongside your Microsoft 365 and day-to-day IT, so it is set up properly and not left half-configured.

Why this matters now

Attackers increasingly target identities and small organisations. Microsoft’s 2025 Digital Defense Report highlights identity as the main attack route, with the overwhelming majority of identity attacks being password spray or brute force. A Mastercard small business study published in 2025 reported that around one in five small and medium businesses had to close after a cyber attack. Staff are also bringing their own AI tools to work, which puts company data at risk of leaking. Defender and Purview address both problems.

Defender Suite for Business Premium brings five layers together so alerts, devices and identities are managed in one place instead of across a patchwork of products. That also cuts the cost and noise of running many separate security tools.

Microsoft Purview: protect and prove

Purview helps you find sensitive information, stop it leaving the business by accident, spot risky behaviour and show auditors what happened. It is also what makes Microsoft 365 Copilot safe to roll out, because Copilot only sees what your permissions and labels allow.
