It can. The EU AI Act applies to UK businesses whose AI systems or AI outputs are used in the EU, for example if you sell AI-powered services to EU customers.
Most UK SMEs that use everyday tools like Copilot internally will have few direct obligations. However, basic duties such as AI literacy for staff and transparency still apply to some uses. Deadlines for the stricter “high-risk” rules have been changing, so check the current position if you trade in the EU.
