What should a charity expect from an MSP?

A Managed Service Provider (MSP) should do more than fix problems when something breaks. For charities, an MSP plays a key role in continuity, risk management, and governance support.

Core expectations of an MSP

A charity should reasonably expect an MSP to:

  • Keep systems running reliably
  • Provide consistent day-to-day IT support
  • Help manage cybersecurity risks
  • Offer clear accountability and documentation
  • Support trustees with plain-English advice

Understanding charity context

A good MSP understands that charities:

  • Often rely on volunteers
  • Have limited budgets
  • Handle sensitive information
  • Are accountable to trustees, funders, and regulators

Support should be proportionate and practical, not over-engineered.

Governance and reassurance

An MSP helps trustees by:

  • Providing oversight and continuity
  • Reducing reliance on individuals
  • Helping evidence “reasonable steps.”
  • Supporting audits, funding, and assurance processes

This reassurance is often as valuable as the technical support itself.
