Microsoft 365 includes built-in service status reporting that shows whether Microsoft services such as Outlook, Exchange, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive are experiencing issues.
This status information helps determine whether a problem is a wider Microsoft issue or something specific to a user, device, or local network.
Why Checking Service Status Is Important
When email, Teams, or files stop working, it’s not always clear where the problem sits. Issues may be caused by:
- A Microsoft service outage
- A regional service disruption
- A local internet or network issue
- A device or account problem
Checking Microsoft 365 service status early helps avoid unnecessary troubleshooting and confirms whether the issue is outside your organisation’s control.
How to Check Microsoft 365 Service Status
There are two common ways to check:
1️⃣ Microsoft 365 Admin Centre (for administrators)
If you have admin access, Microsoft provides live service health updates inside the admin portal:
- Sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Centre
- Go to Health → Service health
- Review any advisories or incidents affecting services
This shows official Microsoft updates, affected regions, and progress toward resolution.
2️⃣ Public Outage Reporting (for non-admins)
If you don’t have admin access but your internet connection is working, public outage reporting sites can indicate whether others are experiencing similar issues.
These reports are useful for identifying widespread problems, particularly with Outlook, Teams, or OneDrive.
When Should I Check Microsoft 365 Service Status?
It’s a good first step if you notice:
- Outlook is not sending or receiving email
- Microsoft Teams calls or meetings, are failing
- SharePoint or OneDrive is not syncing
- Multiple users are affected at the same time
If several services are affected simultaneously, it often points to a Microsoft-side issue rather than a local fault.
What Microsoft 365 Service Status Can (and Can’t) Tell You
It can help confirm:
- Whether Microsoft is experiencing a known incident
- Which services are affected
- Whether the issue is regional or global
It cannot:
- Diagnose local network or Wi-Fi problems
- Fix device-specific issues
- Resolve account or permission errors
If no incident is reported, the issue may need local investigation.
What to Do Next
- If a Microsoft incident is reported:
Microsoft will work to resolve it. In most cases, waiting for recovery is the correct action. - If no incident is reported:
The issue may relate to connectivity, device configuration, or user settings and may need further support.
