We’ve had in-house teams do penetration tests before. Why use an outside provider?

In-house testing is valuable, but an independent penetration test gives you a fresh, unbiased view of your defences. External testers approach your systems the way a real attacker would, without assumptions about how things are supposed to work.

Benefits of an independent pen test

  • Objectivity: your own team may overlook weaknesses in systems they designed or maintain every day.
  • Specialist skills and tools: dedicated testers keep up with the latest attack techniques and use professional tooling.
  • Credibility: clients, insurers, auditors and procurement teams often ask for an independent test report.
  • Clear reporting: findings are ranked by risk with practical remediation advice, plus a re-test to confirm fixes.

Should we stop testing internally?

No. The best approach combines both: regular internal vulnerability scanning and checks, plus an independent penetration test at least once a year or after major changes.
