Online shopping is convenient, but it comes with its own set of risks.
To protect your data and personal information, follow best practices before and during purchases.
Please find our quick checklist: KEY STEPS TO SHOP SAFELY AND CONFIDENTLY ONLINE
- Check the seller. Search for reviews and a real address before buying from a shop you do not know.
- Go to the shop yourself. Type the web address or use a bookmark; do not follow links in unexpected emails or texts.
- A padlock is not proof. It only means the connection is encrypted, not that the shop is honest.
- Pay by credit card or a payment service rather than bank transfer; they add buyer protection.
- Use a unique password for each shop, and turn on two-step sign-in where it is offered.
- Avoid public Wi-Fi when entering payment details.
- Be wary of fake delivery messages asking you to pay a small fee or confirm details.
- Check your statements regularly and report anything unfamiliar to your bank straight away.
