Endpoint protection is security software that protects the devices your staff use (laptops, desktops, servers and mobiles) from malware, ransomware and other cyber attacks. Each device is an “endpoint”, and each one is a possible way into your business.
Antivirus vs modern endpoint protection
Traditional antivirus looks for known threats. Modern endpoint protection, often called EDR (endpoint detection and response), also watches for suspicious behaviour, such as a program suddenly encrypting files, and can stop it automatically, even when the threat is new.
What good endpoint protection includes
- Real-time malware and ransomware protection
- Behaviour monitoring and automatic isolation of infected devices
- Central management, so every device is covered and up to date
- Alerts to your IT provider when something is detected
- Reports showing protection status across the business
Why it matters
The UK Government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025 found 43% of businesses reported a breach or attack in the past year, and phishing was the most common. Malware protection is also one of the five technical controls required for Cyber Essentials.
